The River Paintings

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” Heraclitus, Ancient Greek philosopher.

Rivers have been a constant fascination for me over a number of years.  Recent forays into salmon fishing in Scotland gave me the inspiration for a number of paintings.  Many of these use the Spey as the subject of the work but other rivers include the Tweed, the Nith and the River Ness.  It is the light on water and the many qualities of reflections that keeps me searching for a painting that characterises the many qualities of the river. I want these paintings to reflect metaphorically and physically the experiences and anticipation familiar to anyone who has stood in a river in the hope of catching the Atlantic salmon.

“Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that is is not fish they are after”. Unknown.
